Heavy rains and fierce winds could not deter the 330 participants of the Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup, which concluded on 25 March after three weeks of play. Having faced postponement due to adverse weather early in the competition, the final day of the tournament was marked with sunshine and calm skies.
Players were in top form across the 20 categories with players ranging from age under 8 to 40-plus. Many participants, particularly high performance juniors, capitalised on the tournament policy that entry into multiple categories is permitted. This gave young players the opportunity to challenge themselves against peers and older athletes.
Twenty-four champions were awarded their share of gifts and prize money, including Magali de Lattre, the winner of the Women’s Singles Open. Magali is undefeated in the history of the tournament. Meanwhile, her counterpart in the men’s division, Peter Wessels, clinched his third win of the tournament.
The Abu Dhabi Wilson Tennis Cup, the largest mass-participation tennis event in the region, is organised by Zayed Sports City and supported by Wilson, Sport 360, PSS Emirates and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
