Extra International Sports has built up a strong basketball programme which continues to grow and attract great players to Zayed Sports City. One such player is 14-year-old Jad Al Khayer, who joined the team at the beginning of the season and loves the lessons it shares with him.
Jad chose basketball for a variety of reasons, namely because it was popular within his school and piqued his interest. Having a father who is a former pro player meant that the sport was in his blood, but becoming a great player was not as natural as some may think.
"I didn't start off as a good player," Jad said. "In fact, I was nowhere near, and it took me years to get to the stage that I am at now. I am still improving due to commitment and my drive."
Commitment, leadership and teamwork are three critical lessons he attributes to the sport. "[Basketball] has helped me with revision and learning new topics, as the lessons it is teaching me help me with hard work in general. Furthermore, I can sometimes use basketball as an outlet or break from schoolwork or stress," he notes.
For kids like him, he recommends it to anyone wanting to try something new. "It teaches a lot of lessons and helps with many aspects of general lifestyle. It's a fast-paced, skilful sport made for keen beginners as well as fierce competitors looking for a challenge," he concluded.
