The inaugural weekend for The Big Weekend was hailed as a huge success as thousands of people of all ages descended upon Zayed Sports City. Held under the patronage of Sheikha Shaikha bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan and supported by Healthpoint, The National, Majid, Abu Dhabi Week and Radio 2. The goal of the event was to get families active together, and it achieved just that.

Over 35 activities were set up throughout the weekend, including a zone filled with inflatables to challenge both children and adults. Often seen as play, just 10 minutes of jumping around burns 80 calories. As they descended the obstacle course or bungee run, it was clear that the workout got their hearts pumping. Sports activities, including organised opportunities like a climbing wall and fitness classes, as well as free-play events in tennis, rugby and football, were also a big hit. Parents and kids remarked at how much fun it was to kick about together, in a break from their usual routine.

Also in the sports zone was Abu Dhabi’s Fittest Kid, a competition run by Haddins that named six children as cream-of-the-crop following drills like shuttle run and bear crawls.

Life-sized bowling, in advance of the World Bowling Championship was a wet and wild hit as was the paintball area that was set up to promote the sport that will soon arrive to Zayed Sports City. For a slower pace, families could be found making arts and crafts, browsing the marketplace or being entertained by local acts on the stage. Emcee Hassan Al Sheikh kept the crowd engaged and had lots of prizes and giveaways too that were given to lucky visitors.

Satisfying kids and kids-at-heart, this event was a huge success!
