Andy Murray is already looking ahead to a strong 2015 season, which kicks off for him on 1 January at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. The official tournament draw confirms that Murray will line up against Frenchman Gaël Monfils for the first match of the annual tournament at International Tennis Centre from 1 to 3 January.
All signs point towards 2015 being a stellar year for the Scot, who took home the inaugural Mubadala World Tennis Championship trophy in 2009. After undergoing minor back surgery last September, he struggled earlier this season to return to the form which saw him win Wimbledon in 2013 and the Grand Slam in 2012. However, with three ATP title wins under his belt in the last two months, Murray has shown signs of his usual brilliance.
Should Murray make it through to the second day, Rafael Nadal awaits. As the second seed, Nadal receives a bye along with top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic. Djokovic will start his 2015 campaign against the winner of day one’s fixture between reigning Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka and crowd favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
If Nadal and Djokovic both make it through their respective matches, sports fans in Abu Dhabi could be treated to a battle of epic proportions as the two titans of tennis potentially face each other in the final. One of the greatest rivalries in tennis history, Djokovic and Nadal have faced off against each other an incredible 42 times, the most head-to-head meetings of any pair in the Open Era. With their match-ups usually reserved for Grand Slams and finals, the last time they met was at the French Open final, where Nadal came away victorious and leading their overall head-to-head 23 matches to 19.
