History of Padel Tennis

Padel appeared during the 70's in Mexico. Enrique Corcueca, the inventor, installed in the middle of his squash court a net and an opposite wall, and closed the court with a fence. He used perforated wooden rackets that gave this sport its first name: Paddle-Tennis.

His friend, Alfonso Hohendole, exported it to Spain and built 3 padel courts in Marbella Club during the same period. Due to the success of the sport in this sports club, padel started spreading throughout Costa del Sol and famous sportsman such as Manolo Santana, became interested and enthusiastic about this new game.

Padel was strongly developed initially in Argentina, which is considered today as the birthplace of this sport, where it was the most popular sport after soccer in the 90's. In Spain, padel is played all over the country but is in Andalusia where to look for its roots. This sport has had the greatest increase of practitioners and clubs in this country over the past 5 years.

There are approximately 4 million padel players all over the world, specially concentrated in Latin America and Spain, though it is also practiced in other European countries such as France, Italy, Belgium, and Portugal.

In the last World Padel Championships more than 12 nations took part in which Argentina, Spain and Brazil were the leaders. France is now in the 5th place of the world ranking.
