With more than three decades of history, Zayed Sports City has become an iconic sports and entertainment venue. Every event that has passed through the grounds has helped to create its astonishing legacy. This page includes some of the major events that have helped tell the tale of this storied site.
The Asian Football Confederation’s 1996 Cup tournament was one of great pride for the UAE. As the host venue, Zayed Sports City Stadium was filled with fans cheering for the home team as they defeated Iraq followed by Kuwait, making it into the final against Saudi Arabia. The UAE squad claimed silver in the tournament, however the pride of the nation swelled as the team left its mark on history.
Abu Dhabi caught football fever in 2009 and 2010 when teams from around the world came to Zayed Sports City Stadium for the FIFA Club World Cup. Featuring thrilling football from the best club footballers across the globe, this event created a frenzy for the sport and memories to last a lifetime.
The premier football event in the GCC, this biannual tournament was hosted at Zayed Sports City Stadium in 1982, 1994 and 2007. The UAE teams have each played before their home crowd, taking the championship in the most recent edition and sending a wave of elation through the crowd of supporters.
To celebrate the UAE’s humble beginnings and immense progress, the 40th National Day featured a spectacular Official Ceremony at Zayed Sports City Stadium. The massive production told a story of the nation through music, lights and theatre, leaving a crowd of more than 43,000 residents in awe.
In 1999, Khalifa International Bowling Centre opened its doors with great fanfare as it welcomed the 14th FIQ World Bowling Championship. Bowlers from around the world played their hardest, scoring strikes and spares along the way, all for the opportunity to be crowned the champion. The World Bowling Championship will return to Zayed Sports City again in 2014 and 2015.
With its own storied history, the UAE President’s Cup preceeds even Zayed Sports City. Throughout the year, professional clubs in the UAE battle for a spot in the final and the chance to play in front of tens of thousands of fans at Zayed Sports City Stadium.
