Our Story

Even before the country began writing its legacy, the United Arab Emirates has shared a strong connection with the world of sport. From football to falconry and camel racing to caracals, UAE nationals have followed, participated and excelled at a variety of different sports. With a passion so undeniable, it was only fitting to create a venue that would do this love of sport justice.

And so Zayed Sports City was born.

Built to fulfill the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – the UAE’s founding father and first President - Zayed Sports City was inaugurated in January 1980 as a testament to the country’s passion for sport, and a platform to develop and incubate the country’s promising sport talent. Zayed Sports City was as a state-of-the-art facility for its time and after three decades of continuous development and growth it is now the premier entertainment and sporting destination in the UAE. The Zayed Sports City Stadium enjoys landmark status amongst both sport fanatics and residents of the capital alike, and has even cemented its place in the country’s iconic history as the only image featured on the AED 200 bill.
